Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to offload part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal estimates Mercedes at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – following the McLaren team were valued at £3.5bn in a change of corporate structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who holds a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake approximately 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Structure

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who both hold a third of the enterprise.

An official representative said: "We will be making no official statement on the matter. The governance of the team will remain unaltered, and all three partners are dedicated to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Financial Increase

The deal signifies a significant increase in worth of the Mercedes team after Ineos Group acquired its share for £208 million in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the expansion in valuations of Formula 1 outfits recently due to the increasing appeal of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and earned more than $630m (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

It is Pitt's most successful film and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Present Performance

The Mercedes team are second in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren, with three Grands Prix remaining this season.

Their lead driver George Russell has won two of the 21 races so far and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
